The Senate Judiciary Committee has given its final approval to a bill proposing an overhaul of the nation’s immigration system. After considering more than 200 amendments, the committee passed the bill on May 21, 2013. Part of the measure, as passed by the committee, would ease restrictions on companies who wish to hire skilled workers from countries like India. The bill signifies a compromise between competing immigration interests, and Senators in “The Gang of Eight” – those who worked behind the scenes for months on the bill – remain optimistic that the bill will now receive broad support.
Leaders in the Senate expect the bill to be considered for passage by the entire Senate body in early June. If it passes, the bill would then move to the House of Representatives for deliberations.
