In response to Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s State of Disaster Declaration last week, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) announced an automatic extension of certain Texas driver’s licenses, identification cards, and election identification certificates as an ongoing effort to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
To qualify for the automatic extension, the expiration date on the driver license or ID card must (1) be on or after March 13, 2020, and (2) be within 60 days of the end of the State of Disaster. This waiver applies to expiration dates only. A person who is not eligible to drive because of an active enforcement action (suspension, revocation or denial) may use the card for identity purposes only.
If you are a non-Texas resident, please check with your state-specific agency responsible for the issuance driver’s licenses and other identification cards to determine whether an automatic extension is available and its conditions. Among states that have delcared automatic extensions of driver’s licenses are Arizona, Connecticut, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Main, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, and more states are likely to join as the nationwide pandemic continues.
